Walker Automotive Guide to Using the Correct Fluids in Your Vehicle

Walker Automotive Guide to Using the Correct Fluids in Your Vehicle

Today's Walker Automotive post focuses on using coolant. If you pour in the wrong kind, it won't protect the cooling system and may even void the warranty. Check your vehicle owner's manual. Of course, your Walker Automotive service advisor will know the proper coolant for your vehicle.Brake fluid is confusing for some Wilmot drivers. Back when we opened Walker Automotive, most vehicles used Dot 3 brake fluid. Now we have Dot 4 and Dot 5. Some Wilmot residents mistakenly think the higher numbers are an upgrade. You know, if 3 is good then 4 must be better. That's not how it works. They are different formulations to meet the demands of differences in brake systems. Only one of them is designed for your vehicle.Ditto for transmission fluid. For decades there were two basic types of tranny fluid used at Walker Automotive: friction modified or not. With the tremendous engineering advances in vehicle automatic transmissions, there have been several new types of fluids developed to pr ... read more

Ask Walker Automotive: What Happens When a Serpentine Belt Breaks?

The serpentine belt is aptly named since it snakes around under your hood. It may lack its namesake's fangs, but it sure packs a wallop when it breaks. The serpentine belt powers a lot of engine systems. It runs the alternator, which charges the battery; the water pump (on some vehicles), which cools the engine; the air conditioning, which cools the driver and passengers; and the power steering pump, which allows for easier steering. When the belt breaks, all of these systems shut down.Okay, so maybe you can live without air conditioning and power steering for a while, but your battery can't live very long without an alternator, and when the cooling system goes down, your vehicle engine will overheat. That's why Wilmot drivers should never wait to get a serpentine belt replaced.Serpentine belts are fairly inexpensive at Walker Automotive in Wilmot. And they look downright cheap when you compare them to the cost of an overheated vehicle engine, a tow truck, time lost on the road, inconve ... read more

Keep Your Cool in Wilmot: Air Conditioning Services

Most Wilmot drivers don't even think about their air conditioner. Now here's a tip for Wilmot vehicle owners: Run your air conditioner every so often during NH winters. This circulates the lubricant to help keep the seals from drying out. The air conditioner actually removes some of the moisture in the air. So if you have trouble with fogging on your vehicle windshield during NH winters or during a rain storm, running the A/C on the defrost setting should help. Now on some Wilmot cars you can't run the A/C at the same time as the defroster. Don't ask me why, but I suspect lawyers were involved. Also, air and water can get into the A/C system. That can reduce the efficiency of the system and also lead to corrosion that causes damage. Wilmot drivers should periodically purge the system and replace the refrigerant to remove the air and water.NH drivers would be wise to learn the ea ... read more

Water Pump

Your cooling system is very important. It circulates coolant through the radiator and your engine to protect your vehicle from overheating. There are five main components to the cooling system: the radiator the radiator cap the hoses the thermostat the water pump The water pump's like the heart of your cooling system, circulating the fluid throughout your vehicle. It's a small pump that's driven by the engine; usually by belt, but sometimes by a chain or gear. The water pump only operates when the engine's running. Water pump failure is pretty routine. We see it often at Walker Automotive. Some start failing at around 40,000 miles/64,000 km, but most fail by 100,000 miles/160,000 km. Consult your owner's manual or friendly and knowledgeable service advisor at Walker Automotive to see what's recommended.Since a water pump either works or it doesn't, you need to change it when it fails. Water pumps fail in one of two ways: the bearings fail or they ... read more
